We're SCAMPERS!!

Well, as some of you may already know, we Swansons, LOVE to camp! I mean it … we LOVE LOVE LOVE it! Jason and I have gone a lot of different places together already, but now that we have a family, we’re even more excited to take Lucy (and any future siblings) out into nature and to all kinds of neat places.

For the longest time, we’ve prided ourselves on being tent campers and tent campers only. But, with the changes that a baby brings, sometimes that means that your style of fun has to change too. Now, don’t get me wrong – we’re NOT done tent camping – but, we’re putting that on hold for a few years, probably. You see, the unusually HOT Missouri summer this year really put a damper on the execution part of our desire to take Lucy into nature with us. That made us think, “Maybe we should get a small camper – maybe a pop-up!” And that started the wheels in motion to look into it. Well, if you know Jason, then you know that once he sets his mind to something, there’s no stopping him!

So, after much research and financial calculation, we decided on a 13-foot Scamp trailer. We got the smallest Scamp because it’s the ONLY camper on the market that we could get and not have to get a new/new to us car or truck! A HUGE must! It weighs just a little over 1,000 pounds and we are using our 2008 Honda CR-V to pull it. Now, we did end up doing a couple modifications to the CR-V to make it optimal, but they were much cheaper than a new car!  Scamp also makes a 16-foot trailer and a 19-foot fifth-wheel trailer.

The Scamp that we purchased will sleep four adults (or two adults and two kiddos) comfortably and *maybe* we could squeeze a pack-n-play in for a fifth if we would need space for a third kiddo or something! It does have a small dining table that turns into the “master” bed and the other two spots are bunks in the front. It has a small kitchenette too – a little sink, a small fridge and a two-burner, gas stove. We also opted for the A/C and the furnace since that stuff is kinda the whole point of why we abandoned the tenting for now! The other extra that we’re pretty excited about is the hitch on the back so we can still take our bikes with us on our hitch rack!

Another thing that we really liked about it is the fact that it IS so small. If we ever move houses and would have a third-car garage, we can fit it in a standard garage stall and door! Since we don’t currently have a three-car garage, we have to put it in storage. But, we found an interior, climate-controlled place in the caves in the hills of KC for a really reasonable price! (Side note: That place is SUPER cool – just the room where they store the RV’s is four football fields long and two wide! When we took a tour, there was millions and millions of dollars worth of RV’s in there and no one would EVER know!)

It’s nothing super fancy, but it suits us and we’re VERY excited for this next phase for our little family!
